London Global Cancer Week

November 15, 2020 7:00 AM (EST) - November 20, 2020 9:00 AM (EST)

Series of virtual meetings (most free of charge) - https://www.lgcw.org.uk/events/

Cancer is now the second leading cause of death globally, responsible for nearly ten million deaths in 2018 and has become a significant risk not only for the populations of high income countries but also in the less wealthy low and middle income countries where it is killing one person every five seconds. Building upon the success of last year’s meetings London Global Cancer Week 2020 will take place between Sunday 15 November and Friday 20 November with a co-ordinated series  of over 20 different events providing a 360° picture of the impact of the rising incidence of cancer in these emerging countries.

Unlike last year the majority of the meetings will be conducted as free to attend online events.  For the hosting institutions this represents a significant opportunity to increase the size and diversity of the audience that they are addressing.   We will see how international partners are strengthening capacity in cancer control systems in many of the low and middle income countries and hear their assessment of the challenge that COVID-19 now  poses to Cancer control and the implementation of global Universal Health Coverage.

Participating institutions include the Commonwealth Secretariat, African Cancer Registry Network,  African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), Alliance Mondiale Contre le Cancer (AMCC), International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR),  The Lancet Oncology, Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology (SLACOM), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,  National Cancer Institute Center for Global Health, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal Institute of International Affairs Chatham House and the UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS).

This exciting session, organised in partnership with the British Society for Immunology (BSI), aims to raise awareness of immune-related adverse events in cancer treatment and to shed some light on the limited biological understanding of what’s causing them. Chaired by Professor Gary Middleton from the University of Birmingham, this webinar will offer a virtual platform to allow cancer researchers and basic immunologists to come together to raise and address the open questions around immune-related adverse events and to better understand, predict, prevent and treat them. We are delighted to be joined by:

  • Professor Bettina Ryll - Melanoma Patient Network Europe, Sweden
  • Dr Lucia Possamai - Imperial College London, UK
  • Professor Tomas Kirchhoff - NYU Grossman School of Medicine, USA

There will be an opportunity for you to submit questions live during the session. You'll also have the option of claiming 1 CPD credit for your attendance during the registration process. CPD certificates will be charged £15.

Registration is free, however, if you are in a position to make a contribution towards the NCRI, please add an amount when prompted during the registration process. As a charity, our income from events has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and we'd like to ensure we can continue to offer these webinars at a reasonable charge.

Who should attend?
Scientists, Medical/clinical oncologists, Surgeons, Trainees, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Immunologists, PhD students, Patient experts and anyone interested in the interlink between the immune system and cancer.
