Advancing Cancer Research in Sub-Saharan Africa - new pilot program from the Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research

This grants program, focused initially on Uganda and Kenya, will serve as a pilot initiative to advancing clinical cancer research for rapid impact on patient outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa; and to enhancing capacities to empower applicants from these countries to effectively compete as leading investigators for global research opportunities in the future. Lessons learned from this pilot will serve as a basis to expand this program in subsequent years to encompass additional sub-Saharan African countries.

Supported Research Approaches, and Permissible Technical Foci:

Areas of cancer intervention that will be supported under this program include early detection and diagnosis, treatment, delivery of care, and palliative care.

  • Applications focused on breast, colorectal, esophageal, or hematological cancers are strongly encouraged. Applications focused on cancers largely supported under global infectious disease investments (such as cervical or Kaposi Sarcoma) should NOT be submitted.
  • RTFCCR is particularly interested in research that can lead to better patient outcomes in the near-term future, including quality of life; with an emphasis on outcomes identified in partnership with patients.
  • Implementation research, as well as clinical trials, both bio-medical and behavioral, will be supported under this RFP.  Proposals for basic and/or translational research are NOT invited and will NOT be reviewed.

RTFCCR has a particular interest in drug-repurposing, therapy de-escalation, and palliative care, as well as application of technology to expand capacity in-country for detection and/or treatment. Regardless of the specific focus or approach, applicants must include Patients as Partners in their efforts to be eligible for funding under this RFP.

Deadline:

  • Stage I: Needs Assessment and Planning Grants - 1 December, 2023

Anticancer Fund RFA - Clinical Trials in Brain Metastases

This Anticancer Fund RFA seeks to increase clinical trial activities in patients diagnosed with Brain Metastases (BM), including Leptomeningeal metastases (LM). We are looking for innovative approaches that can improve survival rate in this specific patient population. The focus is on clinical trials assessing interventions that can increase survival or induce durable responses.

Despite of numerous registered trials and efforts in this patient population, there is still a high need of new and successful treatment options due to the rate of uncompleted and terminated trials. To limit trial execution failure, prioritisation will be given to applicants that have successfully conducted clinical trials in this patient population in the past and have a track record in conducting clinical trials in BM and/or LM.

We welcome applications from all over the world and do not have geographical restrictions.

Deadline for submission of the LOI is Sunday 1 May 2022, 23:59 CET

As ACF seeks proposals in line with its vision and mission, the proposed intervention must be commercially neglected (as defined in detail in the eligibility criteria).

Grant Round Open! Worldwide Cancer Research 2021 Grant Round

About Worldwide Cancer Research

We are a UK based charity funding early stage, discovery research anywhere in the world.

We have a history of recognising innovative scientific ideas that have the chance to revolutionise cancer medicine. We were founded 40 years ago to support brand new avenues of research and allow scientists to take intellectual risks in exploring challenging new concepts and approaches.

If you have a novel, exciting and creative idea that could help prevent, diagnosis or treat cancer, we may be able to support you with a project grant. Since our foundation in 1979, we have invested in nearly 2,000 research projects around the world.

Many of these projects have already improved the lives of people with cancer, and others are opening entirely new areas of cancer research. However, we know there is still so much to do, and this is where you come in.

What do we fund?

We award project grants of up to £250,000 and of 12 to 36 months in length to support basic, fundamental or translational research into the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. More information about what we fund and what we are looking for in a project can be found in our Research Strategy.

How to apply

Our 2021 grant round opens on Monday 15th February. Submission period for applications opens on Thursday 4th March and submission closes on Friday 2 April. Please visit our website for more information or contact the Research Funding team at grants@worldwidecancerresearch.org.

NCI - Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA): Cancer Prevention, Detection, Diagnosis, and Treatment Technologies for Global Health (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)

NCI is pleased to announce the publication of a new NCI funding opportunity announcement (FOA): Cancer Prevention, Detection, Diagnosis, and Treatment Technologies for Global Health (U01 Clinical Trial Optional).

NCI will host an informational webinar for potential applicants on Friday, March 12th from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM Eastern Time. NCI program staff will present on the scope and focus of the program and take questions from interested potential applicants.

Open Date: May 02, 2021

Expiration Date: June 03, 2021

This new FOA supports the development of cancer-relevant technologies suitable for use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Specifically, the FOA solicits applications for projects to adapt, apply, and validate existing or emerging technologies into a new generation of user-friendly, low-cost technologies for preventing, detecting, diagnosing, and/or treating cancers in people living in LMICs.

Applicants should have a working assay or device prototype (not necessarily already capable of cancer applications). The U01 project includes studies to both adapt this technology as well as demonstrate technical functionality and clinical performance for use of the device or assay in specific LMIC settings by meeting objective performance milestones followed by improvements and validations of the technologies in the LMIC settings. Projects proposed in response to this FOA will require multidisciplinary efforts to succeed; therefore, all applicant teams must include expertise in engineering/assay/treatment development, oncology, global healthcare delivery, and business development. Investigators responding to this FOA must consider affordability and cost-effectiveness as well as usability at the point-of-need as part of their design criteria.

This funding opportunity is part of a broader NCI-sponsored Affordable Cancer Technologies (ACTs) Program.

Visit the ACTs webpage at for additional program contacts, answers to frequently asked questions, and information on previously funded ACTs awards.

Request for Application - Evolutionary Therapy (Trials) - Deadline LOI 1 March 2021

Opportunity open to applicants from all countries. Please read the eligibility criteria & instructions carefully before applying: https://www.anticancerfund.org/en/evolutionary-therapy

This Request for Application (RFA) seeks to increase clinical trial activity of evolutionarily informed therapeutic strategies aiming at improving survival outcomes of cancer patients.

Knowledge about tumour evolutionary dynamics has been growing rapidly. However, there has been a limited translation of that knowledge into therapeutic trials. The most clinically advanced strategy is adaptive therapy. Adaptive therapy is a treatment strategy attempting to prolong response to treatment by delaying the emergence of resistance. The goal of adaptive therapy is to maintain a controllable stable tumour burden by allowing a significant population of treatment-sensitive cells to survive. The main principle of the intervention is to control the tumour and prolong survival by allowing on/off treatment periods based on a valid marker.

This RFA will accept clinical trials on adaptive therapy and any other evolutionarily informed strategy, as long as they meet all criteria (see eligibility criteria).

We encourage investigators working on evolutionarily informed strategies (including adaptive therapy) to apply for funding for their clinical trial evaluating such approach in cancer patients.

For further information on what is seen as evolutionarily informed strategies and adaptive therapy, we would like to refer applicants to a recent article by Gatenby & Brown (Gatenby RA, Brown JS. Integrating evolutionary dynamics into cancer therapy. Nat Rev Clin Oncol 2020; 17: 675–86).

Please contact apply@anticancerfund.org for any questions related to the RFA and to check eligibility of their proposal in case of doubt.
